What Is Sedation Dentistry?

For nervous young children and special needs patients whose condition creates barriers to dental care, sedation dentistry is the answer they need. Sedation dentistry refers to the use of sedatives to help our young patients to relax in the dentist’s chair. At Cascade Kids Dentist, we offer sedation for a variety of procedures, from a cleaning to a cavity filling. Sedation can be combined safely with local anesthesia to make your child’s treatment as pain-free and comfortable as possible.

Be sure to talk to our dentist during your child’s next visit to understand the benefits of sedation for pediatric patients.

Is Sedation Dentistry Right For My Child?

Sedation is a safe treatment option for many children. Our team has the training and experience needed to gently and effectively administer sedation based on your child’s needs and comfort level. Sedation is not a treatment itself, but a way to help patients feel at ease, or sedate them for a successful procedure as needed. To determine if sedation is right for your child, talk to our dentist about your questions and concerns.

Sedation Dentistry

Laughing Gas

Laughing gas is a mild yet effective sedation method and is most commonly used in pediatric dentistry. The gas is safe to use and induces a state of ease and relaxation for patients of all ages. Our doctor administers the gas through a small mask placed over the patient’s nose. Once the gas is turned off, the effects immediately fade, leaving the patient awake and alert.

Oral Sedation
Oral sedation is typically used for longer or more invasive procedures. It is delivered as a pill or liquid before the patient’s treatment. Children under oral sedation become deeply relaxed and drowsy, but may not fall asleep. It may take one to two hours for the effects of sedation to leave the system, depending on the dosage used.
